"That Leopoldstadt is now joined to the whole tapestry of theatre in America, where culture is simultaneously thinning and thickening, is one of the wonders of the world as well as a mirror in which we might find the way to a better one” — Tom Stoppard

“Simultaneously intimate and epic… this Leopoldstadt makes itself shatteringly relevant here and now…” — The Washington Post

A Jewish family braves the darkest and most consequential chapters of the 20th century in this epic masterpiece from the late Tom Stoppard.

Under the direction of Carey Perloff, a frequent collaborator and dear friend of Stoppard’s, this new production features script revisions the two made expressly for our theatre.

Don’t miss the largest production in Writers Theatre history and the final play from one of our era’s greatest playwrights.

Synopsis

At the dawn of the 20th century, Vienna is the heart of European culture. While an extended family gathers in the elegant Merz home for the holidays, two brothers-in-law passionately debate their conflicting visions for the future of their family and the Jewish people––a tension that will echo through the generations that follow. Traversing decades of joy and strife, from 1899 to 1955, this Tony and Olivier Award-winning new play follows one family’s reckoning with a past it cannot escape and a future it cannot control in an epic story of love, betrayal, and enduring bravery. The final masterpiece from the late Tom Stoppard comes to Writers Theatre in a new production directed by Carey Perloff, the playwright’s beloved friend and frequent collaborator.
