The Inheritance of Art

In partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago, this panel examines the theft, displacement and restitution of artworks in the years leading up to, during and after World War II and how provenance researchers work to recover these stories.

Tamar Kharatishvili

Tamar Kharatishvili is the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Research Fellow in Modern Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. She completed her Ph.D. in Art History at Northwestern University in 2024. Tamar's recent written work includes essays in Sonia Delaunay: Living Art (Bard, 2024); Arshile Gorky: New York City (Hauser & Wirth, 2025), and contributions to the catalogue for Frida Kahlo's Month in Paris: A Friendship with Mary Reynolds (The Art Institute of Chicago, 2025). At the Art Institute, Tamar works with Caitlin Haskell, Gary C. and Frances Comer Senior Curator, and Jacques Schuhmacher, Executive Director of Provenance Research, researching the early 20th-century collection with an emphasis on provenance and the international art market.
