2013 was an incredible year for Writers Theatre!
Here’s our chronological recap of the 13 main events that made this year spectacular…

1. We produced our first-ever dance musical – Sweet Charity – to rave reviews!

2. Time Magazine called our production of The Letters “a nearly perfect evening of theater — an ideal match of play, performance and setting.”

3. Yellow Moon opened, pairing two veteran Writers Theatre actors with two actors making their Writers Theatre debut in what Time Out Chicago called “A quietly moving, skillfully immersive dual coming-of-age tale.”

4. Playwright David Ives joined us for the first week of rehearsals for The Liar, which received rave reviews and for which Director William Brown won a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Direction of a Play.

5. The League of Chicago Theatres presented Artistic Director Michael Halberstam with their 2013 Artistic Leadership Award.

6. Our Education Department received the 2013 Communities in Schools of Chicago’s Al Ward Spirit of Giving Award & co-led Teens at the Table, the central program in the city-wide initiative to address youth violence, Now Is The Time.

7. We launched a brand new website and ticketing system to improve patrons’ online experience.

8. We kicked off our 2013-14 season with The Old Man and The Old Moon – a wonderfully successful collaboration with actor/singer/musician/puppeteers PigPen Theatre Co.

9. We officially launched the On To a New Stage Campaign for a new theatre center, announcing that as of November 13th, we had raised more than $22 million toward the estimated $31 million project.

10. We opened the Midwest Premiere of Conor McPherson’s Port Authority in our Books on Vernon venue, which The Wall Street Journal called “a flawless revival.”

11. Our Executive Director Kate Lipuma was appointed the Board Chair for the League of Chicago Theatres.

12. We received a $10,000 NEA grant to support the development and production of a world premiere musical, Days Like Today, which will begin performances on May 6, 2014.

13. The Chicago Tribune named our Artistic Director Michael Halberstam the Chicagoan of the Year in Theater!
