Education Overview

Our education programs have served more than 30,000 students throughout Chicagoland. We are dedicated to providing affordable arts education programs that:

  • FOSTER the development of creative expression
  • ENGAGE students in cross-cultural dialogues
  • ENCOURAGE collaboration and critical thinking
  • Are EXCITING and EDUCATIONAL!

The Carol Marks Jacobsohn Arts & Education Program at Writers’ Theatre includes:

Write On!, a completely flexible artist-in-residence program that can be customized to suit your needs. We can create an after-school drama program, a theatre unit that connects directly with your classroom subject, a series of classes or ANYTHING else you can imagine.

The Novel Series Study Plan, (NSSP) a cutting-edge arts and literature curriculum. Students study a book through writing exercises, discussion prompts and vocabulary lessons in addition to working with a Writers' Theatre Teaching Artist to explore a book using theatre performance. Students use their bodies and voices to make new and exciting connections to the text. A rich curriculum and an alternative to worksheets and basal readers.

The MLK Project: The Fight For Civil Rights, a touring educational performance that chronicles a student’s journey through the Civil Rights Movement. The play features the real stories of Chicago-area Civil Rights Activists. The play tours to schools and community organizations in January and February. 2012 marks the 6th annual tour of the play.

Audience enrichment programming includes: From Page to Stage, a free, public collaboration between Writers’ Theatre and North Shore libraries that explores the literary and theatrical themes of our stage productions, and our post-show discussions.

Writers’ Theatre also offers exciting internship opportunities in the areas of development, marketing and communications, arts education and theatre administration.
