CANDIDA
Written by George Bernard ShawDirected by Michael Halberstam
Featuring Donald Brearley, William Brown, Christian Gray, Scott Parkinson, Kristine Thatcher and Karen Janes Woditsch
One of the world's great plays, this recounts the soulful love sickness of 18 year old Marchbanks for Candida, the parson's wife. The parson is at first amused, then incensed and finally angered. In typical Shaw fashion there is a recognition and reversal at the end, when it is the mooning poet who turns out to be the stronger suitor, and the self confident pastor, the weaker. Through it all there is Candida, one of Shaw's greatest insights into womankind; and also the ineffectual curate, the secretary with a crush on her boss, and the father in law who is positively the original bourgeois mercenary.
