  • The Undoing Date: 01/21/2008

    On Monday January 21st at 7pm author Anastasia Royal will be having a book signing and short performed reading from Writers’ Theatre inspired by her new book UNDOING I DO (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Press, Hard Cover) currently in stores.  Her inaugural work “follows one free-spirited woman as she traverses the battleground of marriage and divorce.  The event will take place at the Books on Vernon location at 664 Vernon Ave in Glencoe, IL.     “The Many Faces of King Lear”

    In August Artistic Director Michael Halberstam gave the keynote address opening a series of lectures on “The Many Faces of King Lear” at Oakton Community College.  His lecture focused on William Shakespeare’s King Lear in productions throughout history.  WBEZ Chicago Public Radio was there to capture it all.  Listen to the entire podcast here.

     

    “Oscar Wilde: Myth, Celebrity, Artist”

    In November Professor Joel Kaplan, former Head of the department of Drama and Theatre Arts (University of Birmingham, U.K.) presented a multimedia presentation examining how Oscar Wilde, himself, created the larger than life persona of ‘Oscar Wilde’ and went on to maintain and exploit this myth at the height of his career. The event, held at the Chicago Cultural Artistic Center, also had performed readings from Wilde’s life and greatest works by an all-star cast including Michael Halberstam, Nicolas Sandys and Jϋrgen Hooper with direction by Jimmy McDermott.

     

    "The Question of Evil in Shakespeare: Literary & Psychoanalytic Perspectives"

    Also in November the Institute for Psychoanalysis held a conference on "The Question of Evil in Shakespeare from a Literary & Psychoanalytic Perspective", at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago. Director Michael Halberstam was joined by actors LaShawn Banks as Othello and Timothy Edward Kane as Iago, in a scene from Othello in the form of a live rehearsal. There were also presentations by internationally renowned Shakespeare scholars David Bevington of the University of Chicago and Richard W. Wheeler of the University of Illinois.
